Metal-matrix composites are currently experiencing active development in the US and abroad. Envisaged uses range from high-performance, high value-added military and aerospace applications to high-volume, low-cost commercial applications. While significant progress is being made, concerns of high cost and less-than-desired mechanical properties exist. Although a variety of composite fabrication techniques are now being developed, no one approach has yet been defined that optimises properties and cost. This paper discusses the status of PM-based metal-matrix composites. Some of the existing problems are identified and potential solutions are discussed. 16 Refs.
