Climate change, extreme weather, and water utilities: Preparing for the new normal

The article describes how the effects of climate change on water utilities are expected to create major challenges for utilities as they make long-term plans for how to maintain adequate water supplies and quality into future in the US. The National Hurricane Center estimates that Sandy damaged or destroyed 650,000 homes and left million customers without power. In addition, a withering drought, the worst in 25 years, covered up to 60% of the country, causing widespread water shortages and agricultural losses and exposing much of the country to significant wildfire threats. The scientific evidence for human-caused global climate change has become quite compelling in recent years. Global average temperatures have been rising and with the projected future warming, there may be changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and in the hydrologic cycle, leading to altered patterns of precipitation and runoff;
