Preparation and properties of montmorillonite/SBS modified bitumen

Organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT)/SBS modified bitumen composites were prepared by melt intercalation and their microstructures were characterized by XRD and fluorescence microscopy. The physical properties and ageing properties of OMMT/SBS modified bitumen were investigated. The results showed that OMMT/SBS modified bitumen exhibited an exfoliated structure, and OMMT play a role of crosslinking central points which were beneficial for the formation of SBS crosslinking networks. OMMT can effectively improve the viscosity and softening point of SBS modified bitumen. Compared to SBS modified bitumen, the increment in viscosity decreased and retention of penetration increased after PAV, indicating that the addition of OMMT can enhance the aging resistance of SBS modified bitumen.
