The plane problem of the sliding contact of a punch with an elastic half-plane is considered. The deformation force resisting the sliding of the punch; caused by the asymmetry of the contact pressure curve; is calculated. It is established that; in order to satisfy the law of conservation of energy; it is necessary to take account of additional tangential forces applied to the end corners of the punch. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
