A crucial part of the smart grid, the smart distribution system is discussed with respect to the integrated framework and new characteristics of the smart distribution network. An investigation is made on the smart distribution system involving the study and application of new equipments, planning and design, optimal operation, system analysis, demand response and novel technologies. Finally, prospects of the smart distribution system are projected from the perspective of the energy internet and integrated energy systems. © 2015 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.
