A one-dimensional (1D) screen technique is proposed for three-dimensional (3D) printing, which enables both the 3D resolution and the number of two-dimensional images comprising 3D images to be increased. The 1D screen technique controls the vertical dot density used to represent the grayscale so that the effective print resolution is higher in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction. There are three types of screen methods: 1D-AM, 1D-FM, and 1D-hybrid screen methods. We demonstrated a 60-directional print with a resolution of 426 × 320 and a 48-directional print with a resolution of 533 × 400 using a 2,400 dpi binary printer. We also demonstrated a 30-directional print with a resolution of 426 × 320 and a 24-directional print with a resolution of 533 × 400 using a 1,200 dpi binary printer. In addition, the depth range in which 3D images could be displayed without blurring was evaluated. © 2008 The Japan Society of Applied Physics;
