Based on DFEMA analysis, an optimal design of aluminum alloy cylinder block for passenger car was carried out. The flow and speed distributions of coolant in the cylinder block were quantitatively determined by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), while the temperature field and fatigue safety coefficient of cylinder block were predicted by finite element analysis (FEA). Through measurement of coolant speed and temperature distributions in the cylinder block and engine reliability test, results show that the cylinder block has high reliability in actual operation and the measured results well agree with computed data, thus proving effectiveness of the presented design method.
