Toughening PVC with VC-BA/nano-CaCO3 masterbatch

A kind of composite masterbatch was prepared with vinyl chloride-butyl aerylate copolymer (VC-BA) and surface treated nano-calcium carbonate (nano-CaCO3). The PVC composite material toughened with VC-BA/nano-CaCO3 was made by mixing the masterbatch with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The optimum toughening effectiveness was acquired when the mass ratio of VC-BA to nano-CaCO3 equaled to 2:3 in the composite masterbatch. There existed a synergism in toughening between nano-CaCO3 and VC-BA, and besides, the former played a function of reinforcer. When the mass ratio of PVC to the composite masterbatch was 100:20, the PVC composite material was endowed with the tensile strength of 51.0 MPa and impact strength of 49.5 kJ/m2, about 10 times of pure PVC.
