The vacuum arc current commutation characteristic plays an important role on breaking process of the low voltage DC hybrid circuit breaker (HCB). In order to gain the current commutation characteristic and the criteria, the structure and principle of the DC HCB is analyzed and the simplified circuit of the current commutation is proposed. The test circuit of the vacuum arc currentcommutation is set up. The vacuum arc development is observed by the high speed CMOS camera and the influence of the main current, commutation circuit parameters and arcing time on the current commutation is investigated. Based on the test results, the vacuum arc current commutation characteristic and criteria is obtained and the modified criteria are conducted. The breaking test of the 400V/5kA DC HCB is conducted, which also verifies the effectiveness of the criteria.
