Some of the drivers behind the information and treatment technology trends; the technology itself; and some of the issues and considerations associated with use of the technology and their implications for water utilities are described. The fundamental information technology (IT) trends and trends toward improvements in microelectronics are expected to continue. Water utilities should use IT to turn the wave of Baby Boomer retirements from a problem into an opportunity. The water industry should consider forming a central clearinghouse to provide advice on IT equipment and application selection because IT field can be especially confusing;
