Fabrication of porous alumina ceramics by gelcasting together with foaming at room temperature

Porous alumina ceramics with 77%~85% porosity and pore size of 40~200 μm were fabricated by foaming together with gelcasting. The composition of porous ceramics was α-Al2O3, and the microstructures were tailored by modulating the solid content or the quantity of foaming agent added. The compressive strengths were 9.40~32.50 MPa, and the fracture mode was studied. The thermal conductivity of porous ceramics was 0.80 W·(m·K)-1 at 1000°C.
