The voltage source converter (VSC)-based multi-terminal HVDC (VSC-MTDC) system has wide application prospects in distributed generation, renewable energy generation, power distribution and power market, etc. The characteristics of the system and the research on its control method are analyzed. In order to meet the requirement for fast and effective control of the VSC-MTDC control system, a MAS-based VSC-MTDC control system is designed by making use of the basic characteristics and functions of the MAS, with the coordinated control scheme for VSC-MTDC by MAS and a detailed analysis of the manner of implementing the bottom layer Agent control presented. A PSCAD/EMTDC simulation model is developed to demonstrate that the efficiency and stability of the VSC-MTDC system can be greatly improved by the MAS.
