PM aluminium drives forward in new BMW breakthrough

Various issues related to PM aluminum parts for BMW engines at the 2005 Hagen PM Symposium are discussed. German PM part producer SchwäIbische Hütttenwerke (SHW) GmbH has reported the development of new components for the BMW cam-phaser system in Double-VANOS (double-variable camshaft control) used in the M3 engine. SHW uses the conventional press and sinter route to produce a PM aluminum chain sprocket for the BMW cam-phaser system and a new PM manufacturing process for a PM Al stator ring also for the same system. The new production route can involve continuous cold isostatic pressing in combination with pressure sintering through a two-sided open mould to form a sintered profile.
