Safety performance of high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) under fire condition has drawn extensive attention. Localized fire test method first proposed in Global Technical Regulation for HFCVs will have a significant impact on the development of HFCVs in China. Based on the analysis of limitations of bonfire test method for high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks, the technical rationale, main content and feature of localized fire test method were systematically studied. Challenges for the development of high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks and compressed hydrogen storage systems in China were also indicated. Some suggestions for the related standard drafts in China were proposed in this paper.
