The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a 6.5 m diameter; passively cooled; deployable telescope that will orbit the L2 Earth-Sun point beginning in 2014. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is leading the development of the JWST mission with their partners; the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency. The Canadian contribution to the mission is the Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS). The FGS also incorporates a flexible narrow spectral band science imaging capability; which adds to the scientific capabilities of the mission. The FGS consists of three main components; namely an optical assembly; a set of instrument control electronics; and control software; which resides in an instrument control and data handling unit common to all the instruments. The optical assembly of the FGS instrument consists of two modules. The first (guider) module images two separate 2.3′? × 2.3′?regions of the JWST field of view (FOV) onto two independent 2K × 2K focal plane arrays. The second (tunable filter imaging module) consists of a single 2.2′? × 2.2′ FOV that is imaged on a separate 2K × 2K focal plane array through filters selected by a filter wheel and through a scanning Fabry-Perot etalon. This tunable filter imager channel allows flexible narrow-band imaging with a spectral resolution of ∼100 in one of two wavelength ranges; namely 1.6-2.5 μm or 3.2-4.9 μm. The FGS program has completed its detailed design phase (phase C) and is currently in the manufacturing; assembly; integration; and test phase for an engineering test unit. Manufacturing of flight model components has also commenced. © 2009 CASI;
