Magnetic domain-free hard-magnet-biased soft magnetic underlayers for perpendicular media

We have successfully demonstrated single-domain hard-magnet-biased (HB) soft magnetic underlayers (SULs) by means of a synthetic antiferromagnetically (SAF)-coupled structure. Magnetically in-plane isotropic CoCrTa-based alloys as a hard-magnet pinning layer were used. Amorphous soft CoTaZr was chosen as a pinned layer to minimize coercivity (Hc) at a thickness of 50-200 nm. Minor loops of CoCrTaRuCoTaZr clearly showed single remanent magnetization and radial anisotropy orientation; and a single-domain structure was confirmed by Kerr images. Interfacial exchange energy (JAF) was in the range of 0.05-0.36 erg cm2; which strongly depends on the kind of pinning layer used. HB SAF SUL exhibited a higher switching field (Hsw-) of 200-600 Oe than Hc in a single CoCrTa layer. The difference between Hsw- and Hc depends on the composition of CoCrTa and the relative thickness ratio of CoCrTa and CoTaZr. A radial anisotropy of the pinning layer in any directions is induced by applying an external field greater than Hsw- at room temperature. HB SAF SUL with Hsw- =936 Oe exhibited outstanding robustness to stray fields of up to 500 Oe. © 2006 American Institute of Physics;
