The Forming Mechanism and Rheological Properties of Two-component Supramolecular Gel Materials

Three aromatic carboxylic acids, DCn(n=14, 16, 18), were synthesized, and their gelation behaviors with ethanediamine (EDA) were tes-ted in different solvents. The gelation tests revealed that DCn+EDA(1: 1) could form two-component supramolecular gels in some solvents with high polarity(H2O, DMF, DMSO). The microstructures of two-component gels were obtained via SEM, and FT-IR spectroscopy studies showed that the carboxylate formed by DCn and EDA gelated the solvents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that in two-component gels, DC16+EDA(1: 1) took a hexagonal packing mode. On the basis of the results of IR and XRD analysis, a possible multi-stage self-assembly process for the two-component gels was proposed. The rheological studies showed that DC18+EDA/DMF gel had a good tolerance to external forces and possessed a reversible thixotropic property. © 2021, Materials Review Magazine. All right reserved.
