Bifurcations are marked by complex hydraulic conditions, characterized by high secondary flow, which is of great interest for sediment transport. This research shows the approach and methodology of 3-D CFD simulations of sediment transport through reproduction of a series of physical models of a channel bifurcation. This paper presents a detailed analysis of flow characteristics in the bifurcation, whereas a following article describes the simulation of sediment transport in the bifurcation. © 2021, Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, ein Teil von Springer Nature.
