A micromechanical framework is developed for the analysis of deformation inhomogeneities within boundary layers. The main idea is to average the inhomogeneous fields along the surface, but to preserve the dependence of the averages on the distance from the surface. Several properties of such averages are derived. Finally, the analysis of the boundary layer induced in an elastic body by a sinusoidal fluctuation of surface traction is provided as an illustrative example for which analytical solution exists. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
