Diffraction of a plane electromagnetic wave by a helically conductive cylinder with a narrow longitudinal slot is considered. An approximate analytical solution is obtained, which is valid for cylinders whose diameter in terms of wavelength and ascent angle of the helical lines are small. A polarization-selective resonance is found, which provides for strong scattering at one of the circular polarizations. Backscatter characteristics of a model chiral cylinder are measured in the centimeter-wave band.
