Canadian paper and forestry earnings damaged by U.S. softwood lumber duties

Canada's leading paper producers reported net losses in the third-quarter of 2002 because of the U.S. imposed duties on Canadian softwood lumber imports. A survey of 11 canadian paper and forestry companies showed a combined loss of C$27.9 million in the third quarter of 2002. Earnings were recorded from continuing operations and before special one-time charges or extraordinary gains from asset sales.
