Study on performance of light propagation in tapered plastic optical fiber connector

Based on beam propagation method, an analytical model for the tapered plastic optical fiber connector with large dimension was presented. Using Crank-Nicholson difference scheme, the section of coupler was analyzed. The effects of the coupling length and the cone angle of the taper section for the connector on the insert loss and split ratio were discussed from the large and small section respectively. According to the simulation results of the tapered connector with different coupling lengths (250-1900 μm) and cone angles (1°-9°), it was found that when the cone angle is 6° and the coupling length is 1500 μm, the performance of the coupler is good. The probation field distribution of the connector is beneficial to the design of the connector.
