摘要
The current status of nutraceutical-based research is discussed from the viewpoints of fermentation strategies and modern metabolic engineering. There is growing interest in the exploitation of cultured marine microbes to develop pharmaceutical compounds. Although optimization of the fermentation process has the potential to increase production of target compounds dramatically, there are still limitations to how far this process can go. Heterologous expression techniques are commonly deployed when the original microbe is unable to have a sufficient growth and /or compound production rate.
