Preparation and luminescence properties of Ba2-xB2O5:xSm3+ red-emitting phosphor

The Ba2-xB2O5:xSm3+ phosphors were synthesized via the high temperature solid state reactions. The effect of the doping quantity of Sm3+ activator on the luminescence properties was investigated. The results indicate that the sample synthesized is a pure phase of Ba2B2O5. The main excitation peaks were located at 342 nm (6H5/2→4H9/2), 359 nm (6H5/2→4D3/2), 372 nm (6H5/2→6P7/2), 400 nm (6H5/2→4F7/2), 436 nm (6H5/2→4G9/2) and 450~510 nm (6H5/2→4I13/2, 4I9/2, 4I11/2, 4G7/2), respectively. The main emission was located at 550-575 nm (4G5/2→6H5/2), 580-620 nm (4G5/2→6H7/2) and 630~660 nm (4G5/2→6H9/2). The most intense emission was excited at a wavelength of 400 nm. It was found that the luminescent intensity firstly increased and then decreased with increasing Sm3+ content (x). The luminescent intensity had the best value when Sm3+ content x was 0.06. The concentration quenching mechanism was the electric dipole-electric quadrupole interaction in the phosphor.
