Functionalized polymers with 1,3-dienyl or styryl groups by anionic living polymerization

The possible use of 1,1-diphenylethylene derivative substituted with 1,3-butadienyl group (2) in functionalization reactions of anionic living polymers was studied. Both s-butyllithium and polystyryllithium react quite selectively with the 1,1-diphenylethenyl group of α-methylstyryl group (1) or 2 and, on the other hand, 1,3-butadienyl or α-methylstyryl moieties remain intact during the reactions and in the presence of 1,1-diphenylalkyl anion generated after the reaction. By utilizing such characteristic reactivities of 1 and 2, polymers functionalized with 1,3-butadienyl or α-methylstyryl groups were successfully designed to synthesized at the chain ends and within the polymer chains.
