A novel, multi-agent architecture for a virtual CIM system

This paper introduces a novel, multi-agent architecture to integrate globally-distributed manufacturing resources in order to build a large integrated manufacturing system in the form of Virtual Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (VCIM). VCIM is a new integration system concept, defined as a network of interconnected and distributed global, Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system. The proposed VCIM architecture has a three-layered structure, and it accommodates three categories of agents: Customer agents, Facilitator agents, and Resource agents. In this architecture, multiple Facilitator agents with similar functionalities coordinate the agents' activities in a parallel connection manner, which enable the system to be much more reliable. In addition, agent implementation approaches also are presented. © 2005 IJAM.
