摘要
Bolted flange-plate connections are very common for splicing tension members in steel structures. Positive aspects of this method include simple handling as well as its low cost. So far, research on hollow sections has been focussed mainly on flange-plate connections for circular sections or for rectangular sections with bolts on only two opposite sides of the tube. The present study focusses on flange-plate connections for square hollow sections with bolts symmetrically placed on all four sides of the tube. Altogether, 16 specimens have been loaded in tension to study the influence of the flange-plate thickness as well as the bolt layout on the connection strength. During the tests, strain-gauged bolts as well as an ultrasonic bolt gauge have been used to monitor the bolt loads. Following the tests, the strength predictions of different calculation methods have been compared with the results of the tests as well as tests done earlier by other researchers.
