When the new Mediterranean high-speed railroad was commissioned, SNCF decided to carry out an endurance run and beat the existing speed record. The test run was conducted on the longest high-speed route, the line between Calais and Marseilles. The distance of 1,067.2 km separating those two cities was covered in 3 hours 29 minutes at an average speed of 306.37 km/h. The record was set by the high speed railroad Reseau trainset no. 531 on May 26, 2001 with over 250 VIPs and journalists on board.
