A survey on energy efficient discrete manufacturing system

Discrete manufacturing system is the important producing support of mechanical products and its parts. The energy consumption of discrete manufacturing system is the indiscerptible composition of the product carbon footprint. Aiming to decrease the emitting intensity of carbon dioxide and increase the energy utilizing efficiency, energy efficient manufacturing can be referred to use energy resources efficiently and effectively from its input to the whole manufacturing process. The composition of discrete manufacturing system and its energy consumption characters in production process are analyzed. Taking the manufacturing equipments, manufacturing process and manufacturing system as the object, the current research on energy consumption measurement and modeling, energy consumption simulation and forecasting, energy efficient production scheduling and its optimization for discrete manufacturing system are reviewed in detail. A hierarchical research structure is proposed for energy efficient manufacturing and its main trends are presented. © 2013 Journal of Mechanical Engineering.
