There has been a progressive change in the sealing of bearings for industrial equipment - from the use of elastomer, radial shaft seals to alternatives such as labyrinths. This feature discusses some of the designs of labyrinth bearing isolators, looks at the specifications for levels of protection and provides details of an application in an aggressive environment in the steel industry. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
