摘要
Wide-ranging applications with high-performance properties have provided fibre development impetus in recent decades. The barrier/breathability contradiction in fabrics has promoted innovations in chemical fibres with improved process technology encouraging these developments. Bicomponent fibre technology is discussed and Lyocell. Expanding global fibre consumption will come from five sources - natural and oil-based synthetic fibres, man-made cellulosic fibres, recycled fibres and biopolymers (eg cornstarch). The latter are discussed in more detail. Novel fibre and yarn spinning technology is discussed. Laminating/coating developments are noted and the emergence of smarth coating. Interactive textiles react with human/environmental conditions to produce changed material properties. Composites are briefly touched on and the advances in medical textiles in three listed categories. Biomimetics and fibres are summarised in conclusion.
