Beschichtungen werden eingesetzt, um funktionale Anforderungen zu erfüllen oder um Reibung und Verschleiß von Bauteilen und Werkzeugen zu mindern. Ein Hauptziel des Einsatzes von Beschichtungen ist die Verbesserung der Haltbarkeit und damit die Steigerung der Nachhaltigkeit von Prozessen und Produkten. Mit Blick auf den Klimawandel und der damit einhergehenden höheren Bedeutung von Nachhaltigkeit, ist der Einsatz von Beschichtungen, etwa DLC-Schichten, unerlässlich
