Gain enrichment of perturbed hexagonal patch antenna for X-band application

A hexagonal patch has been designed with a tilt in accordance to the line feed. A simple rectangular slot has been implemented on the patch so that the antenna can be operated in the entire X-band (8 GHz to 12 GHz). To enhance the gain of the antenna a superstrate with square metal strips arranged in a systematic manner has been implemented that acts like metamaterial. The S-parameter plot has been taken into consideration (S11 <−10 dB) for detail study of resonant frequency and bandwidth. After implementation of the superstrate the fractional (percentage) bandwidth has been found as 40 % with the bandwidth 4 GHz, so the antenna can be treated as a broadband antenna. A mathematical formula has been provided for the resonant frequency for the proposed patch taking its geometry into consideration. From the simulation by HFSS Software other parameters like directivity, antenna gain, radiation efficiency etc. have been calculated. © 2021
