The Institute of Product and Production Management at the HAW Hamburg researches on the appropriate modeling of decentralized manufacturing control concepts for the purpose of practical implementations. It is shown how the evolvement of digital technologies influenced the history of decentralized control systems. The article points out in which way a so-called “swimming pool model” can be built and validated as a cornerstone for further research on decentralized manufacturing control concepts. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston, Germany.
