Recent advances in handling big data for wireless sensor networks are discussed. T he tremendous advancement in information and communication technology (ICT) has led to the rise of a hot topic of ‘big data’. Big data is defined as large data sets that are complex and, as a result, cannot be handled by traditional methods. Among the many contributors to big data are large scale and densely distributed wireless sensor networks (WSNs), This article presents the concept of big data, the integration of WSNs and big data systems, and big data challenges in WSNs, A survey of different energy-efficient techniques for handling big data in WSNs is presented. An eminent method for big data system and WSN integration can be provided by deploying sensor networks as a source of data for big data systems and building big data system components as data analytics and a storage center.
