Characterizing the Biological Effects of Plasma-Activated Physiological Saline

Plasma medicine, an actively developing medical field, comprises both the direct treatment of biological surfaces and the effect of low-temperature plasma on solutions used in medicine. In this study, the cyto-and genotoxic properties of physiological saline treated with cold plasma were investigated. Mononuclear leukocytes obtained from notionally healthy donors and cells of two blood cancer patients were used as the target. The cyto-and genotoxic effects of the plasma-treated solution were recorded according to the treatment time. No significant selectivity was recorded for the investigated cell lines. The use of cold plasma–treated physiological saline as a nonspecific cyto-and genotoxic agent exhibiting a prolonged effect is proposed. © 2022 by Begell House, Inc.
