This article presents the general basic ideas that should be used to perform seismic analyses of tunnels by means of computerized numerical models. Dynamic tunnel models are especially complex due to the strong ground-structure interaction and the need to adequately characterize both the dynamic behavior of the ground and the vibration produced by the earthquake. Although the damage caused by earthquakes to underground works is usually less than that produced in aerial constructions, it is deemed necessary to analyze the entire set of possible seismic effects for the proper design of the tunnel, especially in high seismicity areas. © 2020 Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos Canales y Puertos.
