Implementation of patient safety measures in low-income countries: case study of the hospital partnership project SAFE@KCH

Background In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), ensuring patient safety is a crucial challenge with direct implications for healthcare delivery and quality of life of the general population. AimThe aim of the Safe@KCH project was to enhance patient safety at the Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Malawi by implementing evidence-based practices and adapting them to the organizational context of KCH. Materials and methods Based on the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) framework, evidence-based practices were identified, adapted to the organizational context of KCH, and implemented. These included the introduction of patient wristbands, perioperative safety checks, and the training of patient safety ambassadors. Results Implementation of these measures led to a significant improvement in patient safety at KCH. Positive effects on the current state of KCH were observed, particularly in reducing errors and mix-ups in treatment. The training of patient safety ambassadors contributed to staff awareness and fostered a culture of safety. Conclusion The Safe@KCH project provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for enhancing patient safety in LMICs. It underscores the importance of targeted collaboration and use of evidence-based practices to sustainably improve healthcare safety and quality. The achievements represent a significant step towards achieving high-quality and safe healthcare for all.
