In this work, AlSi10Ca3Mg0.5 alloy foam-filled SS304 corrugated tubes (FFCTs) were prepared by melt route with surface modification of the tube substrate prior to in-situ foam filling. Results showed that successful metallurgical bonding can be achieved between aluminum foam and the tube with surface modification. Under quasi-static axial loading, the foam core within FFCTs were compressed densely from top to bottom in sequence, showing an axisymmetric deformation mode. Due to the enhanced bonding between the foam and the tube, FFCTs with surface modification demonstrated approximately similar to 19 % increase in specific energy absorption compared to FFCTs without surface modification.
