Within the study of the survival of the Bible in Latin American literature, this article analyses the presence of the myth of Adam and Eve (Gn 2,4b-3,24) in a corpus of 20th and 21st century literary works by Latin American women writers: Magdalena Mondrag & oacute;n, Armon & iacute;a Somers, Rosario Castellanos, Rosario Ferr & eacute; and Gioconda Belli. The biblical story is revisited, subverted and reinterpreted from a critical perspective that seeks to revise the female archetypes of patriarchal culture that have shaped gender identity. The figure of Eve is revalued and re-signified as a model of freedom and autonomy.
