This study examines Q-Chat, a new tool developed by Quizlet that integrates ChatGPT API, for its potential for L2 vocabulary learning. As a generative AI tool, ChatGPT has shown significant potential in enhancing language learning through interactive conversations, grammar corrections, and personalized learning experiences. However, challenges such as the learning optimization gap and the knowledge comprehension gap have been identified by previous research, affecting beginners' ability to fully utilize these technologies for language learning. Q-Chat, as an Intelligent Tutoring System enhanced by OpenAI's ChatGPT API, addresses the gaps by offering structured, scaffolded learning experiences that adapt to various learning styles and skill levels. The paper introduces the design principles of Q-chat, detailing how this tool leverages AI-empowered conversational interface to engage and guide learners in a more structured manner of learning. The paper highlights the importance of aligning design of AI-enhanced learning products with pedagogical and learning needs, and the importance of training language educators in understanding AI concepts to ensure meaningful integration of AI in teaching. It calls for future empirical studies to explore the practical implementation of ITSs in L2 classrooms and their impact on students' learning process.
