Design of Multi-polarisation MIMO Antenna for Heterogeneous Smartphone Applications

In this manuscript, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna, providing wide radiation and diverse bands, is introduced for heterogeneous cellular applications. The introduced antenna design, with an overall main-board size of 75mm x 150 mm, consists of one miniaturised rectangular resonator with multi-polarisation and individually three L-shaped feed lines which have been installed at the edge of the smartphone board. The proposed antenna design for smartphone communication not only exhibits anticipated radiation, but correspondingly supports diverse bands and polarisations according to the antenna's position in the printed circuit board (PCB). The results demonstrate enhanced radiation coverage, worthy bandwidth (of up to 600 MHz), multiple diverse bands suitable for the heterogeneity of the connected devices, low TARC and high-gain patterns. A smartphone board is manufactured according to standard values and its experimental measurements manifest the validity of the proposed antenna. Both the simulation and the experimental array results for the proposed MIMO antenna are compared and exhibit similar behaviour.
