Silica nanoparticles as additives to lubricants. Literature review

A rev., with 69 refs., of research on the possibility of using SiO 2 nanoparticles as additives to lubricants, in which they act as thickeners and anti-wear additives. The effect of functionalization of SiO 2 nanoparticles on tribol. properties of lubricants such as coeff. of friction and antiwear properties was discussed. The most important challenges in obtaining dispersions contg. SiO 2 nanoparticles were presented, the most essential of which were counteracting stability loss and detg. the effect of SiO 2 functionalization on dispersion properties.
