In Mexico, the evaluation conducted by the teacher in the Physical Education session is characterized, among other aspects, by assigning a grade on an evaluation form; however, little is known about the pedagogy and procedures used to evaluate students. This paper seeks to analyze the evaluation types, techniques and instruments used by the physical educator in Physical Education sessions at preschool, primary and secondary schools in Mexico City. A naturalistic exploratory study with a mixed approach was carried out on an intentional non -probabilistic sample of 90 participants and the instruments used were a survey and a structured interview. Three categories of analysis were established with respect to the type of evaluation, evaluation techniques used in the session and evaluation instruments applied to the students. The conclusions suggest that there is conceptual confusion regarding evaluation and grading, with techniques and instruments being used indiscriminately. This lack of differentiation prevents the implementation of formative evaluation in Physical Education sessions.
