This review highlights the history, current state, and future challenges of AR/VR. AR has successfully integrated into surgical practice through intraoperative navigation. Furthermore, AR/VR have the potential to enhance resident education through simulation and improve intraoperative education with radiological integration. It remains to be seen whether patients and surgeons value these technologies in the preoperative setting as an educational adjunct and postoperatively in the form of rehabilitation. Further work is needed to perform a cost -analysis of AR/VR technology in comparison with existing techniques for patient education and rehabilitation, intraoperative navigation, and resident education.
