The main navigational channel bridge of Honghe Bridge in Zhuhai consists of two composite girder cable-stayed structures that are arranged in tandem and share a juncture pier to create a continuous crossing over both the navigation channels of Hongwan Waterway and the Modaomen Waterway. The two cable-stayed structures are identical semi-floating systems, each with span arrangement of 73, 162, 500, 162, and 73 m. The superstructure is formed of steel main girders and the precast concrete deck slabs. The pylons are plan diamond-shaped reinforced concrete structures, stay cables are composed of steel strands, and foundations of the pylons and piers comprise group bored piles. Transverse steel dampers are installed on the tops of the juncture pier and the auxiliary piers to address the transverse seismic effects on the tandem long-span cable-stayed bridges on soft soil. To deal with the issues of buffeting and vortex-induced vibration of the complete bridge and the bridge under typical construction condition, the main girders are fitted with wind vanes, and stabilizing plates are added below the deck for intensification. The structural analysis demonstrates that the load bearing performance of the bridge is sound, and the structure is safe and reliable. © 2020, Journal Press, China Railway Bridge Science Research Institute, Ltd.
