After the adoption of MARPOL 73/78 Annex(VI) for the prevention of air pollution from ships in 1997, the regulation of the emission of environmental pollutants from the maritime transport sector began in earnest. Just a few years ago, the international shipping industry agreed to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050. However, from 1971 to 2019, the amount of CO2 emitted from ships almost doubled. Accordingly, efforts to reduce emissions and realize carbon neutrality in the field of maritime transportation are becoming more intense. In this paper, a hybrid system with a generator and battery was constructed by applying a battery to an existing internal combustion engine-oriented marine power generation system. Accordingly, the control algorithm of the energy management system was designed to improve the efficiency of the generator and prevent unnecessary parallel operations. Also, a simulator was designed to verify the algorithm of the energy management system. As a result, the battery was controlled to respond appropriately to the electric power demand of the scenario that is designed based on a large container vessel. According to the designed control algorithm, it was confirmed that the number of operating generators could be reduced by preventing additional generator start-up in the designed scenarios. In the future, it is expected that generator efficiency operation and environmentally friendly operation will be possible through battery system. © 2024 Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.
