INFLUENCE OF ANTIOXIDANTS UPON PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS OF A TURBOCHARGED DIRECT INJECTION DIESEL ENGINE FUELED WITH SIMAROUBA OIL METHYL ESTER

In current experimentation physiochemical characteristics of simarouba biodiesel blended with various antioxidants, i.e., butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) were analyzed to determine the overall performance and emission characteristics of a single-cylinder, Kirloskar (Legion Brothers Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, Karnataka) make, four-stroke turbocharged direct injection diesel engine operated in naturally aspirated mode. Antioxidants were blended in a single proportion, i.e., 1,000 ppm to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. Results depicted a slightly lower brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 2.87%↓, while brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) enhanced by 1.83%↑ in contrast to diesel fuel. Moving on to emission range, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and smoke opacity were reduced by 56.57%↓, 26.23%↓, 1.61%↑, and 39.13%↓, respectively, as compared to diesel fuel. Hence, it can be concluded that B20 with BHA (1,000 ppm) provides an effective technique in diminishing greenhouse gas emissions, thereby enhancing energy security and sustainability. © 2022 by Begell House, Inc.
