Conversion of a steelworks to climate-neutral steel production

摘要
The production of steel causes significant carbon dioxide emissions. In order to decarbonize steel production, Fraunhofer researchers, TS ELINO GmbH and Salzgitter AG are working on converting an existing smelting plant to a climate-neutral production method. Steel is to be produced through the direct reduction of iron ore with hydrogen - climate-damaging coke as a reducing agent will be completely replaced. The required hydrogen is produced using electrolysis processes using electricity from renewable energies. Overall, carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by up to 97 percent.
