The formation and reaction of alkylidynes on Ni/Al2O3

摘要
Adsorption of the alkenes, ethene and propene on Ni/Al2O3 at 298 K gives initial formation of the corresponding alkylidyne while but-1-ene adsorption forms a mixed phase of trans and gauche butylidyne conformers. The alkylidynes are, however, unstable at this temperature and decompose to lower hydrocarbon fragments. Ethylidyne forms a surface methyl species whereas propylidyne decays to first ethylidyne and, in turn, to methyl. The two butylidynes decompose at substantially different rates forming, again, ethylidyne.
